30 Days!

Hello everyone and welcome to my campaign blog! With the federal election out of the way, the civic campaign is finally kicking into high gear. This is such an important election, and I think at the same time this is a really important campaign. Vancouver’s public education system has always been such a special thing to me. I’ve seen what great teachers and great class choices mean for students, how it can get them excited and involved…not just in school, but in the communities around them.

That’s why I’m running for the Vancouver Board of Education. Our schools are too important to students and communities to have them hum along without direct student engagement. I know as well as anyone that if given an opportunity, students can take their education into their own hands and eloquently describe to their peers what they need in their schools.

Trustees are just that, they are entrusted with the management of our schools. So why not directly involve our key stakeholders? But this isn’t just about students. Parents need to know what is happening with the schools they send their children to. They need to know about the decisions that will impact them before they happen, and with their consultation. For the past three years this hasn’t happened.

Imagine a school board where meetings are cancelled so that motions cannot be discussed and passed. A school board that doesn’t release their key reports. A school board that refuses to advocate for students, and not even explain why. You don’t have to imagine, it’s been the reality for the past three years thanks to the NPA controlled board.

Our students need trustees that will fight for them. People who know what being in the schools of today feels like. Students, parents, and teachers need a board that isn’t afraid of consultation. In short, we need a COPE school board.

COPE, along with Vision, believes we need to return progressive government to Vancouver. So please, join me in demanding a better board and let’s make schools for everyone! It’s going to be an exciting 30 days!
